By day, Mntambo’s the Enterprise Development Specialist for SA Breweries’ Kickstart youth entrepreneurship programme.

After hours, she’s launched Kgoshigadi (meaning “queen” in Sepedi), a green initiative that makes and distributes biodegradable sanitary pads.

“Interacting with entrepreneurs and seeing the impact of their work made me want the same the thing. I’m in a unique position, as my Kickstart work has helped me build my business and Kgoshigadi offers real insights into entrepreneurial problems. I wanted to follow my passions – education and women’s issues – and work in those sectors,” she says.

Her idea for a viable business came from a place of anger she says. “Realising that pads cost R50 for a pack of 10, I was shocked and outraged. I could afford them, but many other women can’t. The more I thought about it, the angrier I became and the business just grew from there. I saw an opportunity for an affordable, eco-friendly sanitary pad that could make a big difference in our country.”

Doing her research, she encountered Jovana Korac and Tebogo Motubase and they joined forces.

“We clicked, as we’re all committed to the same cause. We entered an Innovation Hub competition, taking third place and winning R100 000 cash.
