At just 22, Mutshekwane had already opened her own fashion boutique. She then spent years heading up Marketing & Sales for distinctly African fashion business Kisua and drove the brand to the point where the likes of Beyoncé were wearing the label.

She’s also one-quarter of The Others Girls, a collective who founded WKND SOCIAL and brought New York’s popular weekend brunch trend to Johannesburg. And she’s a blogger and a mother.

Not one to back away from a challenge, she accepted the position as CEO of SAIBPP (a Section 21 organisation driving transformation and development in the property sector) despite her limited experience. Now she’s owning it!

Now aged 30, Mutshekwane has a philosophical take on her career. “People tend to regard themselves as the grand total of their years of experience in specific positions, rather than seeing themselves as products. You need to look at yourself holistically. Consider how you’ve transferred and marketed your particular skills set to different industries,” she says. And she should know – it’s this adaptable mindset that landed her where she is.

Although she’s making successful strides through uncharted territory, she admits being surprised when she was first approached by SAIBPP.
