Phindi Mtyingizane (29), owner of O’Naturals Wigs
When I was a teenager, I’d grow my hair, relax it, then cut it and start all over again. Eventually I realised I simply didn’t like relaxed hair, and I’ve worn it natural since then.
Wearing my hair in its natural state completes me. I love the real me.
Rocking my crown in its natural state makes me feel like myself, which is ultimately what I want.
O’Naturals Wigs came about through my frustration at not having a variety of styles I could use for my natural hair (or perhaps I just lacked creativity!). I felt restricted to either box braids or cornrows, and I wanted to play more. I decided to make a wig for myself, and posted a picture of it online. People loved it and started asking me to make wigs for them as well.
Air-drying natural hair and avoiding heat is the best thing you can do for your hair. After washing my hair, I use an old 100% cotton T-shirt to soak up the excess water. Cotton is gentle on hair and doesn’t cause as much friction and damage as towels. I then create bantu knots or a twist-out to stretch my hair.
