Affectionately known as SA’s First Lady of Comedy, Tumi Morake doesn’t have the polarising effect of many comedians, who tend to be either adored or abhorred. Her fan base is both vocal and visible, cheering on her achievements. These include being the first woman to host DStv’s Comedy Central Presents…on African soil, presenting a one-woman show at Scotland’s famous Edinburgh Festival and being named one of the Free State Icons.

While it may seem as if Morake’s career has suddenly erupted, it’s actually taken years of study and practice to achieve her goals of becoming a leading satirist, presenter, actress, producer and writer – and she’s acutely aware of the highlights and lowlights that have marked her journey. She identifies being financially savvy and starting a production company as two decisions that have contributed greatly to her success.
